Three Farms, One goal. 🚜 🤍 To show our appreciation, and connect. We work closely with our customers. In fact, we like to think of ourselves as part of the family too. Fall is a busy time of year for everyone, but especially producers; back to school, trying to get harvest wrapped up... we wanted to take the load off, even if it's just in a small way, for just one night by delivering a meal to the field. 🍕 We have seen such a positive impact of connecting with our customers in this way. Getting to sit down, take a load off, talk about struggles/successes of this year, see how families have grown, and really just have some 1 on 1 before it's back into the cab to finish the day while the sun sets. Thank you to Chicken Chef Melita for providing some delicious food for us to take with us. (It never disappoints!) We wish we could do this for each and every one of our customers, because frankly, you all deserve it; But we hope to make this a yearly tradition to say thank-you.

Fields can often under produce without obvious signs as to why. Each nutrient behaves differently within plants and soils and it becomes critical to understand where they might be lacking in order to properly manage them; which is one reason why soil sampling, and doing it consistently, is so important. Phosphorus, for example, is extremely chemically reactive and is an important nutrient element limiting crop production in many places after nitrogen. Higher phosphate levels often remain in under producing areas and don't get utilized — so why keep applying more? If you have all the information, often we can continue to produce at the same rate or better while saving money by decreasing an unnecessary input. Call us to learn more: (306) 339-8364

Why Variable Rate? Why Now? 🤔 Farmers are realizing that an effective variable rate program like SWAT MAPS is very important, especially now. #TBT to this Fall foliage we snapped last year! 🍂 Although harvest has already begun in most areas, we're not rushing Fall by any means and are still enjoying the heat and the sunshine! But that doesn't mean that we're not a LITTLE BIT 🤏 excited to see more beautiful Fall colours.

TA DA! ✋ Checking crops is like a real life game of "I SPY" sometimes. 🔎 It's not just walking into the field and taking a look around. It's shaking the plant, inspecting the crop canopy, checking pods, and going right to the soil surface to sift through plant debris to thoroughly get an idea of what is happening in any given crop!

We're still trying to recover from all the fun we had at Banana Days this past weekend in Melita! 🍌 A1 Agronomy brought our @swatmaps truck to the 'Touch-a-Truck' event on Friday evening of the festival. While it wasn't the biggest machine there (see photo #2 😂), We still had lots of folks come up and ask about the truck and what it does. Staging is an important aspect of determining when it's time to harvest and for pest control. 🌾 🐛 In wheat, we always recommend grabbing a crown. Pinch it. Squish it. Play with it! The crop will probably vary some right from the early stages where it feels milky or doughy, to nearly ready to harvest when it feels firm and you can barely put a dent it it with your fingernails. When scouting, we always check for aphids too in relation to crop staging. Many farmers are alarmed when aphids are found in abundance. However, if aphids are found in the later stages, they are likely to be no longer problematic! Ah... the infamous RONA buckets! We love our local RONA 💙 and these babies have been life savers for us over the years. Before we upgraded our sampling trucks, these pails were crucial to collecting and sorting soil samples. Now, we use them for pretty much EVERYTHING else. Because varying seeding rate keeps varying topography in mind. 🌱 We already know that crop emergence and plant establishment will be different in different areas of the field. The SWAT MAPS technology we use is able to map out a number of zones in field, correlated to water and how it moves through the field, but also differences in soil textures. Both of which can affect growth and survivability. At the end of the day, we believe there is no "one size fits all" approach. There are differences in every field, crop and even variety!

Anita has been out scouting for insects recently and has been CRAWLING with Green Lacewings. Green Lacewings are beneficial insects that will eat approximately 1000 aphids a day. It's a great reminder that not all crop insects are bad! Don't worry, she said she'll try to shake out all of the Green Lacewings back in the field before she gets into the truck! 😉 #aphids #crops #cropinsects #insects #scouting #pests

Have you ever met an agronomist who can't keep house plants alive? I think we'll stick to our day jobs. 😉

Often fields are under producing with no obvious signs as to why. Each nutrient behaves differently in plants and soils and it becomes critical to understand where they might be lacking in order to properly manage them. When we are able to delineate different areas of the field, there is a lot to learn about current crop response. Composite soil samples will give you an average of all areas while SWAT MAPS can break out soil- based management zones and help to understand and enhance your field management.
